Lessons:

In this unit, we will begin an exploration into the ways in which color can convey emotions. Through this, we will engage in SEL competencies such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

Emotions in art allow artists to connect with their audience on a deeper level. When viewers perceive and resonate with the emotions conveyed in a piece of art, it creates a powerful connection between the creator and the audience.

Emotions serve as a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, enabling artists to communicate complex ideas and experiences effectively. By depicting emotions in their work, artists can foster empathy, compassion, and a greater understanding of the human condition.

RECOGNIZING EMOTION IN ART

When looking at an artwork, many factors can contribute to the emotions portrayed. For example, what are the colors? The movie Inside Out may be a kids movie, however it utilizes an idea as old as art itself, that blue can represent sadness, red can represent anger, green can represent disgust, etc.

However, communication of emotion in an artwork doesn't stop there. For example, consider the difference between a blended brushstroke versus choppy brushstrokes. One shows a softness and stillness, while the other communicates chaos and energy.

Additionally, contrast and composition can be considered in an artwork. A symmetrical, balanced art may feel more peaceful, while an asymmetrical, crowded piece can come across as more anxious or chaotic. Likewise, a piece with high contrast, a practice referred to as chiaroscuro, can create a more dramatic piece. On the other hand, a low contrast piece feels less impactful.
