In this mini-unit, we’ll dive into the building blocks of art; color, line, form, texture, value, shape, and space, to see how artists use them to create powerful, expressive and visually pleasing works of art.​​​​​​​​​

REMEMBER: Each Sketchbook assignment should contain visually interesting background designs, the vocab/content, and creativity to receive full credit.​

In your sketchbook, document the name and definition of each of the 7 Elements of Art, providing a visual example for each. You can copy the example given below or come up with your own! 

The Elements of Art

Line:

The most basic of the elements of art, marking the distance between two points. It can be characterized by width, length, and direction.

Shape:

The element of art defined by enclosed lines or space. Shapes consists of width and height, and can be

- Organic: irregular shaped

or 

- Geometric: Mathematically perfect

Form:

The element of art defined by width, height, and depth, making it 3 Dimensional.

Value:

The element of art that refers to the lightness or darkness of colors or tones used in an artwork, from white to black. 

Texture:

The element of art referring to the way something feels OR the way it looks like it would feel.

Space:

The element of art that creates a visual sense of depth, distance, and dimension on a flat surface. 

Color:

The element of art defined by hue (red, blue, etc.), saturation (greyscale to full color), and luminosity (lightness or darkness).
