VISUALIZING CULTURAL ART

Lessons:

Cultural art is essential for preserving heritage, fostering innovation and creativity, promoting diversity and inclusivity, and enriching the human experience. It can be utilized as a powerful tool for social change, empowerment, and collective expression. Cultural expression also creates a sense of identity that unifies and builds a community, while sharing individual perspectives.

Through this lesson, students will gain a deeper understanding of cultural art and how it can be portrayed through the medium collage.

CONNECTING THE CURRICULUM

  • Creative Expression: Georgia Visual Arts Standards emphasize creative expression, where students are encouraged to use art to explore and communicate their identity and emotions. Creating a collage about cultural identity encourages students to think about how their personal background, values, and experiences shape who they are.

  • Cultural Awareness and Art: The project encourages students to explore and reflect on their own cultural heritage or the cultures of others. According to the standards in visual arts, students are often required to learn about various cultural traditions and how different cultures use art to express identity.

  • Cross-Disciplinary Connections:

    • Social Studies: The project can be integrated with social studies standards by exploring the student's cultural heritage, which connects to the study of history, geography, and world cultures. By researching their own cultural identity or another culture, students can learn more about global and national histories and traditions.

    • Language Arts: In the language arts classroom, students can write artist statements about their collages, explaining the meaning behind their artistic choices. This ties into the writing and communication standards, encouraging students to articulate and express their ideas clearly and thoughtfully.
